METABOLIC SYNDROME...

Metabolic syndrome is the bridge between poor lifestyle habits and pathological disease.

Also known as Syndrome X, Metabolic Disease, and Insulin Resistance, it is a cluster of conditions associated with increased risk of multiple chronic diseases, including several types of cancer, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and premature mortality.

On average, 1 in 3  U.S. Adults Have Metabolic Syndrome, but for women of color approaching age 50, that number jumps to 1 in 2!

Metabolic syndrome is closely linked to obesity. The prevalence of obesity among US adults increased steadily since the 1990s and is now at epidemic proportions, with over two-thirds of US adults either overweight or obese. 

Why?

A diagnosis is typically made if a person meets at least 3 of the following 5 risk factors:

  • Abdominal obesity: Waist circumference of >40 inches for men and >35 inches for women
  • High blood pressure: >130/85 mm Hg
  • High fasting triglycerides: >150 mg/dL
  • Low HDL (“good”) cholesterol: <40 mg/dL for men and <50 mg/dL for women
  • High fasting glucose: >100 mg/dL
Because the Standard American Diet has drastically changed so much in the last 150 years that we are in a state where we now eat more chemicals than we eat nutrition and it is not only making Americans sick, it's making us sicker than our non-black counterparts...

Combine this with an increasingly urbanized, automated, and sedentary lifestyle and we have an ideal recipe for chronic sickness and diseases where, as many of you can attest, weight issues are only one side effect.

But here's the good news:

Because not too long ago, it was the very path I was on...
In 2011, I experienced what countless patients and clients of mine struggle with.

As a doctor who's helped hundreds of other individuals thrive in their health, my own health had been taking a back seat.
